Appearances

I think that Vazquez does not disclose the fact that Brian and Mickey are not gay until later because she wants us to understand how badly people are being treated and even if they are not gay, but happen to look stereotypically slightly gay, then they are subject to the same treatment. I know when I first read about them I assumed that they were gay, and I think that was her goal. She is showing us that having gay characteristics is considered bad. This article is all about appearances, therefore the title of the article. I think that maybe the issue of antigay violence changes when we recognize that sometimes its victims are heterosexual because there might be even more sympathy, and sadly that might be what actually makes people want to do something about it, but I don't really know. Either way no form of this kind of violence should be happening anywhere, especially in this country.

I agree with you how Vazquez did not tell us that they were gay until later because she wanted the audience to see how they were treated just based on their appearance. Today in society, people judge people based on their clothes, hairstyle, how they present themselves, etc. It is all about appearances. People will assume if someone dresses like a stereotypical “gay” person, that they are for sure gay. I too assumed that Brian and Mickey were gay because of what they were wearing, even though I wish I would not have come to conclusions about them.

People should not be violent towards anyone who they perceive to be gay because of their appearances. There should be no violence towards anyone period.

I just think it's sad that prejudices exist. Often times, they form from different stereotypes. Because of some images people often make assumptions, which lead to hurting peopel's feelings. Assumptions are often ignorant. Perhaps, people should have better understandings and knowledge about each topic.
