Day 2 of rhetoric on the town
Today was the double and there were some really good presentations. One of the ones that really surprised me was part of Alex's presentation. He had a two pictures up at once, one of Hillary Clinton and one of John McCain that were both from the today show or something. Both of them had the person's name and their political party underneath. Alex said that when they put on the screen what political party the person is who is being shown, people who are watching automatically decide whether or not they like that person based on what party they are. If a republican was watching the today show and a senator came on the show that they did not know and they saw that that senator was a democrat, they would probably immediately decide that they did not like that person. If they did not put what political party some of these people belonged to and the public could just hear their opinions on the issues, then I think that people would actually support the right people. I had not thought about this before, but I definitely think that it is true.

Kendal-
YESSS that was shocking, I thought. I didn't really realize that they do that. I don't think I really cared that much about it, although it does send out a message. I never thought about it and just took it as it is and thought it was normal. I think people do not realize that there are little things like that affect them. By labeling politicians by their party, even though it is very obvious which party each of them are in, people are likely to judge them even before they hear them speak. I think it's a manipulation of the media.
I think Alex made a really good point about how when watching television and it has to do with people involved with politics, the party they represent is posted underneath their name. What Alex said about people deciding whether or not they like what that person is saying based off of their party is completely true! I’m pretty sure at some point when I’ve seen a republican come on TV, I automatically auf them because we have different points of view. It’s kind of a sad thing because something we, Americans, try to aim for is not putting people into categories and not being judgmental – but that’s exactly what is happening here.
I was in the same boat as you kendal. As i watched his picture of Mccain and Clinton pop up on the projector i wondered where he was going wih this. alex said that alot of people would watch this show and see the Ds and R and instantly not listen to either of them because of what political party they were affiliated with. I, like you, thought this was a great point. i dont know how he found the picture or even thought of this but i totally agree with him. Whichever show airing the interveiw with Mccain and Clinton should not show the Ds and Rs and let the american public decide who is right and who is wrong. nice thought kendal!
p.s. we're screwed on this precalc project
